Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Geriatrician?

A Geriatrician is a Specialist doctor who cares for people aged 65 and over.

What is a Physician?

Physicians are highly trained specialists who provide a range of non-surgical health care to adult patients.

I am under 65 years old but I have memory problems. Can I see one of your doctors? Adults under 65 years old with cognitive disorders can be referred to us by a General Practitioner.

How do I make an appointment?

You will need to obtain a referral from your General Practitioner to either Dr Khateeb or Dr Lim. The referral will either be sent to us by your doctor, or a hard copy will be provided to you. We require a copy of the referral before an appointment can be booked. Once your referral has been received and reviewed by the doctor you were referred to, our administration team will contact you to make an appointment.

How do I get a referral?

Referrals can be obtained from your General Practitioner (GP), ideally a GP who has seen you regularly and has a record of your medical history and conditions.

What should I bring?

If available, please bring your current list of all medications, any X-ray films, CT or MRI scans, relevant reports from other Specialists, and Medicare or DVA card details.

What happens at the initial consultation?

The initial consultation involves Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, including social and family history, medical history, and medication review. An initial consultation is approximately 60 minutes in duration.

What fees are involved and how do I pay?

There is an out-of-pocket expense for consultations, however our practice fees are below the AMA recommended rates. The preferred payment method is via EFTPOS  to minimise cash handling. We will lodge your Medicare claim electronically at the time of payment for your convenience. Medicare will then pay your rebate directly into your bank account. DVA patients are bulk billed if they are approved for medical care.

Do I need a follow-up?

Follow-up appointments for most patients is essential as our Specialists provide long term management plans along with shared care with your General Practitioner. Follow-up appointments are approximately 30 minutes in duration.

What about transport to and from the doctor?

Our administration team can arrange transport for DVA patients if required with notice. There is free on-site parking at the John Flynn Private Hospital and Gold Coast Private Hospital.

Where can I see a doctor?

Dr Khateeb sees patients at John Flynn Private Hospital or Gold Coast Private Hospital. Dr Lim sees patients at John Flynn Private Hospital only.

I am not the patient, but I want to sit in the consultation. Can I do that?

With the patient’s consent, we encourage any family member, relative, carer, or friend to accompany the patient to their consultation for support and assistance. We allow a maximum of 1 person (excluding the patient) to attend the consultation in order to maintain social distancing.
