Specialist Consultation Services
  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) which includes a thorough assessment of a person's physical, mental, social and functional status. During the CGA, it is an opportune time for screening and review of medications, especially in the elderly where polypharmacy (more medications than required) is a major problem.

  • Specialised diagnosis and management services of neurodegenerative disorders such as strokes and their prevention, Parkinson's disease (and other mobility disorders), prevention of falls, incontinence, under-nutrition and frailty.

  • Assessment of common mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety, along with expertise in chronic pain management.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of cognitive disorders, including early-onset Dementia and Minor Cognitive Impairment (MCI), along with management of challenging behaviours.

  • Diagnostic and management services are provided across all aspects of adult general medicine.

 

Assessment of Decision-Making Capacity

  • Assessment of mental capacity to make decisions regarding lifestyle and healthcare choices, and to fulfil a growing need of testamentary capacity to make or change a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney (EPOA) and Advance Health Directives (AHD).

 

Providing Specialised In-Patient Care to the Elderly

  • The medical needs of the elderly are vastly different from younger adults due to the risk factors associated with age. Our geriatric services provide expert diagnosis and timely management with both short and long-term care plans.

  • Timing of discharge from hospitals while considering social and family supports is crucial and often neglected without the involvement of specialist geriatricians.

 

Nursing-Home Visits
  • This is on request of General Practitioners to assist their services and provide expert geriatric services in nursing homes, with special expertise in Dementia, behaviour and multiple complex medical conditions along with rationalising medication use.

 

Education 

  • Education to health professionals, Interest groups such as retirees, QSuper, Alzheimer's Australia and carer support groups.

  • Regular involvement in teaching medical students, medical specialists in training and peer-specialist groups.
